Interior Design: The DWL Definition
In order to get started decorating a home, we must first understand what the term interior design of really means and encompasses. There are many varying definitions in my experience, but what most interior designers would say-what I am going to focus on here at DWL-is:
The process of designing the interior decorations of a room to achieve the needs, function and style for the user that is a healthy place to live, work or play.
In other words, interior design is about taking a home and picking all the finishes and furnishings in the space to create an end result that beautiful and solves the needs of the homeowner.
What Interior Design is NOT
1. Interior design is NOT something that happens overnight. Many interior design and home decorating television shows would have you thinking you can redesign a home in 24 hours. Many of these shows do prep work, such as building cabinets, which you don’t see during the 30 minute show. Amazing interior design projects in the real world don’t happen overnight…they take days, weeks, months and sometimes years. The process of the project should be enjoyed and celebrated at its completion. Though there maybe ups and downs along the way, interior design is a fun and awarding process.
2. Interior design is NOT just picking paint colors. Interior design is way more than going to the hardware store and picking out paint colors. Interior design encompasses all the finishes that go into a home; the flooring, window treatments, furniture, decorative accessories, and yes the paint colors.
3. Interior Design is NOT impossible. Creating a gorgeous home is something we all can do ourself. It will take hard work, planning and dedication; but I promise it is all worth it in the end. I will share examples of my hard work, planning and mistakes along the way of decorating my home to illustrate that making a dream home is possible.
Decorating With Less: What Does that Mean?
Decorating with less means two things for me.
1. Decorating with fewer furnishings and accessories. Have you ever been in a house where every wall and shelf has something on it? I know I have been in homes like this and it can be a little overwhelming. Typically while flipping through a home magazine you see pictures of rooms with limited decorations or a less is more philosophy. I think this is a better way to decorate your home. On this blog, I will help you learn how to decorate with less with special interior designer method.
2. Decorating with less money. As I said in my about page, even as an interior designer myself, I have a limited budget for home decorating. Decorating With Less also means decorating within your budget. Whether your budget for home accessories is big or small, the information here at DWL will help save money and get the most from your decorating dollars.
Do-It-Yourself: An REWARD Experience
I love doing things myself when at all possible. Of course I know my limits; I don’t play with electricity and water. Somethings are just better and safer to leave to a professional. There is something about doing a project for yourself that is so rewarding and a source of so much a pride. When you are done with a project in your home you can always look back at it and say to yourself look at what I did to make my home a more beautiful. A DIY home is a more meaningful home because your hard work, blood and sweat equity went into the project.
I urge you to find your inner DIY’er and start a project around your home. Of course, always make sure to put safety first, second and always. If you are new to DIY, start something small before you take on the full remodel project. Never be afraid of ask for help along the way when you feel lost or over your head. I promise you in the end all your hard work will be worth it and rewarding.
Please share your DIY projects with me along the way and when finish; I will do the same thing. I will share along the way my DIY projects, how-to’s and failures; which are just learning experiences.
This will be a guide to help your decorating and design your home with less and for less.
