As I have said before, I am a salvage junkie. I love saving anything from the curbside or dumpster that could be repurposed into home decor.

I am obsessed a little, I know it is a problem and it drive my wife a little nuts. However, admitting you have a problem is the first step right?

My Latest Salvage Creation

I found this cut fence picket in the dumpster at my office. I thought that it could be repurposed into something for my farmhouse style decor.

After thinking about it for a little bit I came up with a perfect idea…Photo Display.

Here is how this salvage transformation happened. It all started with this fence picket.

Fence Picket Photo Display Steps

Step 1 – Distress the fence picket

This fence picket was already weathered and distressed. However, I wanted to take it up a notch and add some color. Doing this is easy.

  • First, dry brush a few brushstrokes to be the base for a faded paint look. Let dry.
  • Second, I stained the wood with Minwax Jacobean Stain. Let dry.
  • Lastly, with a medium grit sandpaper I lightly sanded the stain and paint to give it a more authentic distressed look.

Step 2 – Attach bulldog clips

I wanted this photo holder to be easily changeable. I found the perfect solution at Michaels…metal hinge bulldog clips.

These stylish clips I attached to the fence picket with push pins that I sprayed painted black. Using push pins was a lot easier that trying to nail or screw them on.

Step 3 – Attach pop can tab

Now why would I attach a pop can tab to my fence picket? Easy, a pop can tab makes an inexpensive picture holder. Just add a small screw through the tiny hole in the center.

Growing Family

I am so excited for my third child, this time our first boy. His due is October 16th, 2016, and I can’t wait to meet him. This DIY distressed fence picket photo holder is perfect to display the cute ultrasound photos. Once he is born I can replace them with adorable kissable photos of our new bundle of joy.
